highlights from the trenches [Mar. 13th, 2009|06:52 pm]

Out of context, my favorite panel of the pages I just printed out to ink. I draw some goofy crap sometimes.

it's done. [Feb. 5th, 2009|08:38 am]

Hey, do you know what's coming out this Friday? Coraline. I did storyboards for the film for two and a half years and now it's finally going to be out in theaters for other people to see. Like a real movie.

I'm so in awe of the work done by hundreds of amazingly talented artists that hardly anyone will ever hear about, and I hope it does well so that those people can all get together again and make another beautiful movie. So please go and see it this weekend, ideally in 3D, and stay all the way til after the credits. That's very important.

[music |lemon jelly - spacewalk (in the hotel lobby)]

Thanks so much for all the awesome travel tips, everyone! I wanted to reply personally to each one but I've had the lurghy and haven't been up to sitting at the computer. I am reading through them and will be doing as many of them as I can bully my lazy boyfriend into. You are all lovely and helpful.

So we're here, after a day and a half of travel. Considering we're both sickos it went remarkably well. We got to our hotel about 36 hours after leaving home and immediately headed out to visit the Fantastic Mr. Fox set. That movie is amazing-looking. Creepy, almost. Like nothing else. Watch out. I nearly fell asleep in the puppet shop but I remember being very impressed. Then I ate a chicken pasty and went to bed for fifteen hours. Pretty good considering.

Jeremy is still in bed (AT NOON) but I think we're going to explore the Spitalfields Market/Liverpool St. area today, since it's close to the hotel and we are weeeeeeak. Maybe see the Francis Bacon exhibit at the Tate Modern if we have energy. I am anxious to make the most of this trip since we're only here until Tuesday, but I know I'm not going to get to do everything I want to do. And I guess that's okay. It's so nice to be back. And it's not even raining (yet).

I forgot my ipod, though.

gasp, cough [Nov. 9th, 2008|09:22 pm]
[music |choke]

I'm currently staggering my way through either a viral throat infection or a cold (not sure which yet) so bear with me if this doesn't make any sense.

I swore when I got home from Moscow that I would not leave the country for at least a year. But the opportunity to go to England presented itself and before I thought it through all the way I said yes. I've thought it through all the way now and it's still a pretty good idea, 18 hour travel time notwithstanding.

However!!!

What shall I do there. I lived in London for two years, but those two years were spent being 12 and 13 and not having any money, so I didn't get up to much. A ton of people I know have been there recently, and this is me asking what they did. What did you do! What did you eat!!!

(No, I do not want to see Equus.)

so far I know that I want to go to the Orla Kiely store and the Victoria and Albert Museum, but that's about it.

Bonus if you have activity suggestions for Bristol and Manchester, but I'm more concerned about London amusements at present. I am leaving on Thursday. I hope I am done being sick soon. :(

Take a picture of yourself right now.
Don’t change your clothes, don't fix your hair.
Just take the picture.
Post the picture with no editing.
Post these instructions with your picture.

shmoraline! [Sep. 17th, 2008|05:38 pm]

Check out this neat gallery of shots from the production of Coraline. It's wrapping up now, so soon all of these things will be gone. I will miss them.

(bonus: find the hideous puppet named after me!)

i formally request a break. [Aug. 21st, 2008|07:38 pm]
[music |sparklehorse - sea of teeth]

I have a pretty resigned relationship to the dentist nowadays. Things generally go like this:

"Wow, these look beautiful! Very nice!"
"Thank you!"
"You floss really well! Barely any plaque."
"Aw, thanks."
"...Oh, but there's some fillings here, huh."
"Yeah."
"...and look, there's a rotted hole in this one right here."
"..."
"That'll be two hundred dollars."

Every six months, like clockwork. I'm totally cool with needles and all that crap by now, but it doesn't stop me from getting secretly furious when a friend who hasn't been to the dentist in FIVE YEARS comes back with a clean bill of health. I wish I were a shark.

moscow'd [Jun. 2nd, 2008|06:18 pm]
[music |weezer - across the sea]

I'm back from Moscow! I came home on Saturday night to my weird-smelling apartment, where my lovely boyfriend had left some red, white and blue flowers and an apple pie. Aw. I've been stumbling around and falling asleep way too early, but today I finally managed to sit still for four hours and get all my photos up on flickr. I lugged around a million-pound camera for a REASON, goddammit. You can see the set by clicking the photo above, or see a fancy enormous slideshow here.

Two weeks is just about long enough to see the city, and my fossilized language skills served me better than I expected. My mom and I spent as much time in the homes of friends and family as we did doing touristy things, so I think I got a pretty balanced picture of life there. Russians basically want to feed you and make you fat for the winter. The city is growing fast, perpetually under construction and clogged with cars. It feels like everyone is overcompensating for the time when no one had any stuff at all by getting lots of stuff and waving it around to make sure you can see it. The people and the architecture are both much dressier than in America. There is an intense preoccupation with everything imported. Food is EXPENSIVE. And if it's not expensive it's covered in mayonnaise. Good thing I did so much walking.

Highlights were the Nikulin Circus and the Tretyakov Gallery, because I am a cultured young lady. I had a really good time with my mom. I don't think I've spent this much time with her since I went away to school, and it was really good to spend it as adults rather than as cranky-kid-and-parent. Though there was a tiny bit of that too.

It's hard to sum up a trip that wound up being pretty personal... the photos do a better job. All in all I'm glad I went and I'm glad I'm home. No one can ever make me eat a beet again.
